It’s not only on weekends that we like to enjoy a good meal and a nice evening at a restaurant. Though on a Tuesday night, we’re looking for something easy, affordable, simple and close to home. Well I can assure you that I found a gem to put in this category and I’m happy to share my discovery with you.
Cartel Street Food Bar is located on the corner of St-Urbain and Fairmount and has a dining room big enough for everyone but still small enough to feel intimate. You can also enjoy the sun on their beautiful outdoor terrace.
This original, and I would also say eclectic restaurant doesn’t stick to one type of cuisine. The menu is inspired by many cultures and countries and you can enjoy Peruvian, Mexican and even Chinese food here. Why limit yourself when you can have it all? In addition, every night they have an off-menu dish listed on the blackboard over the main board.
Why should you go on a week night you ask? For their many specials and theme nights! For example, every Tuesday you can enjoy homemade tacos for 2$ and cocktails for 5$ and on Wednesdays they offer oysters for 1$ and sparkling wine for 5$. We love it!
Since we wanted to taste everything (well, almost), we opted for a few pinxtos (just like tapas) and a main dish to share. But before anything, we chose our cocktails, the Rising Sun and the Margarita of the day at 5$. You have to know that all their cocktails are made with quality ingredients, which makes them even tastier! You can also choose from their wine list which offers white, red and rosés or a choice of beers, also listed on the blackboard.
For our meal, we began our experience with the shrimp pinxto, served on croutons with a tomato, sour cream and avocado. A classic dish that never disappoints, plus the presentation is really nice.
We then followed with the fried wontons, filled with shrimps and mango and served with a sweet sauce: we really enjoyed this one!
Of course, we couldn’t come here without having their famous soft shell tacos. We tried two of them: the first one was the fish and avocado taco and the second one was the fried plantain and avocado. All I can say is that it was difficult to stay classy while enjoying these!
For the main dish, we chose to share the Curry and cocoa milk fish platter served with sticky rice. I have to admit we were pretty full before the plate arrived, but it was so delicious that we finished the whole thing. The curry sauce was absolutely exquisite.
Of course I would’ve loved to enjoy a serving of homemade churros, but that will be for my next visit. I was waaaay too full!
A varied menu, quality cocktails, daily specials and tempting prices make Cartel a place you’ll want to visit over and over again. Also note that if you come here to celebrate your birthday with six friends or more, Cartel will offer you a 25$ gift certificate to spend as you wish during the evening.
